BT HomeHub 2 and Ubiquiti

BT sent me a new HomeHub device as part of a forced upgrade to a digital voice service. I don’t use a landline anymore, so I wasn’t too interested in this, but it seems they are particularly insistent on me swapping it out so I had to figure out again how to integrate it into an existing Ubiquiti setup.

The way I got it working is:

  • Connect to the device directly using wifi
  • Log in to the admin portal (login on the little plastic card attached to the device)
  • Go to ‘Advanced settings’
  • Go to ‘My network’
  • Go to ‘IPv4 configuration’
  • Change IP address to a network different to the one that Uniquiti is using. My home network is on 192.168.1.x and I set the BT hub IP to 172.16.0.1
  • Change subnet mask to 255.255.0.0
  • Keep DHCP enabled, but disable ‘authoritative DHCP’
  • Set ‘server address range’ to 172.16.02 - 172.16.255.254
  • Save

With that done I can then swap my hubs out. Once everything has restarted you can then access the new BT hub on 172.16.0.1 and disable the wifi (‘disable all wireless’ from the ‘Wireless’ page). Then you can forget about the BT hub entirely.
